Frequently Asked Questions

Please contact me at mail@sophiegullick.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Talking therapies can help lots of people in lots of difficult situations. It can be for anyone even if you think you struggle to open up to others.

Just like you might go to a GP, Physiotherapist or other heath professional for a physical problem or injury, sometimes we may need additional help with our mental or emotional health.

I believe it's important to discover which type of therapy might be helpful for your current needs as there is unlikely to be a one size fits all approach. I can offer a personalised and evidence based treatment using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) or Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR).

To arrange an introductory session, please complete the contact form and you will be contacted to discuss further.

CBT is based on the concept that your thoughts, feelings, physical sensations and actions are interconnected, and that negative thoughts and feelings can trap you in a negative cycle.

CBT aims to help you identify these patterns and then challenge unhelpful thoughts or  behaviours enabling you to develop practical strategies, and more balanced, flexible thinking. Although CBT is focused on what is going on for you currently, we may need to explore your earlier experiences to understand certain rules and beliefs that have developed over time.

Together, we can be curious about  how your earlier experiences may have  an impact in the here and now.

EMDR is a structured psychotherapy approach that is designed to work with distressing or traumatic memories. It encourages the client to focus briefly on the trauma memory while simultaneously experiencing bilateral stimulation (typically eye movements), which is associated with a reduction in the vividness and emotion associated with the trauma memories.

The theory behind EMDR is that many psychological difficulties are the result of distressing life experiences which have not been stored in memory properly and are said to be unprocessed or blocked. These traumatic memories may need some help to become processed, and EMDR can be a helpful way to do this.
